Keeping the tools regularly maintained is the best way to ensure safety and logevity. This type of activity takes place during the day, before the kids arrive for afterschool.
We are always in need of help with upkeep, from cleaning the bathrooms and the breakroom to sorting and organizing the woodpile and the tools. This type of activity happens during the day, before the kids arrive for afterschool.
We are looking for volunteers to help in our retail store. This is where we sell projects that our students make. The hours vary depending on the day and time of year.
Of course, the heart of our program is woodworking. However, you do not need to be a master craftsman or experienced carpenter to volunteer! If you are a DIYer or tinkerer, and would like to assist teens with their projects, this may be an opportunity for you! We have regular volunteer trainings to teach our volunteers how to use the tools and the best safety practices, etc.
The Art Room
The Art Room is where everything crafty happens. It's the last step in the process of finishing a project, whether it's painting or oiling or adding a ribbon. If you enjoy painting, being crafty and creative, the Art Room is a fun place to be!
Skilled Trades
Do you have knowledge of the trades? Our Skilled Trades Program takes place during afterschool. This is where we teach a broad introduction to the Trades to students who have advanced in afterschool and have earned 2 stars on their safety and skills tests. The students make larger scale projects to sell in the gift shop. Volunteers can help set up and prepare for class and assist with instruction. Trades knowledge isn't required but preferred.
We partner with local agencies and other nonprofits to offer our Outreach Program, with focus on serving our target demographic, starting at age 7. Although our general age served through our outreach program is 7-12 years old, we also serve outreach groups of teens and adults. Some of our Outreach programs have a set and repeating schedule, but they are mostly individual events. During these sessions we help the students assemble previously prepared projects, utilizing a screwdriver or power drill.
The Apprentice Program is our organization's social enterprise arm. We employ young adults part-time, giving them hands-on work experience by fulfilling large manufacturing and woodworking orders for businesses and organizations throughout the greater Cape Fear area and beyond. We're looking for volunteers to help with wood milling and to mentor and support our apprentices on the job. This volunteering happens during the day before the kids arrive or afterschool
