Volunteering

Do you want to make a positive impact in a young person’s life?

If the answer is yes, please consider volunteering at Kids Making It!

Being a woodworker is NOT a requirement to become a volunteer. We have a variety of volunteering opportunities at Kids Making It!

You can volunteer as often as you like; it is up to you!

Volunteering Opportunities

Of course, the heart of our program is woodworking. However, you do not need to be a master craftsman or experienced carpenter to volunteer! If you are a DIYer or tinkerer, and would like to assist teens with their projects, this may be an opportunity for you! We have regular volunteer trainings to teach our volunteers how to use the tools and the best safety practices, etc.

- Art Room

The Art Room is where everything crafty happens. It's the last step in the process of finishing a project, whether it's painting or oiling or adding a ribbon. If you enjoy painting, being crafty and creative, the Art Room is a fun place to be!

Our Skilled Trades Program takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. This is where we teach the introductory to the Trades to older teens and young adults. Volunteers can help set up and prepare for class and assist with instruction. Being knowledgeable about the trades isn't completely necessary, but it's helpful.

We partner with local agencies and other nonprofits to offer our Outreach Program, with focus on serving our target demographic, starting at age 7. Although our general age served through our outreach program is 7-12 years old, we also serve outreach groups of teens and adults. Some of our Outreach programs have a set and repeating schedule, but they are mostly individual events. During these sessions we help the students assemble previously prepared projects, utilizing a screwdriver or power drill.

On Mondays and Fridays we offer our kids a classroom setting to work on homework, study, or curl up with a book. We discuss how their day went and help them plan for the future, whether that's discussing which classes to register for next semester or what direction to take after graduation. We're looking for tutors to help with various subjects, such as calculous, social studies, reading, or chemistry and mentors to provide support, guidance, and advice.

The products that the kids create are sold in our Gift Shop, which is open from 10am - 6pm, Monday - Friday, and from 11am - 4pm on Saturdays.

We are always in need of help with upkeep, from cleaning the bathrooms and the breakroom to sorting and organizing the woodpile and the tools.

Keeping the tools regularly maintained is the best way to ensure safety and longevity. This type of activity takes place during the day, before the kids arrive for afterschool.
